Where Is Cappadocia?

Cappadocia sits in the middle of Türkiye — central Anatolia, roughly 730 km south-east of Istanbul and 280 km south-east of Ankara — spread across the provinces of Nevşehir, Kayseri and Aksaray. It is a region the way Tuscany is a region: a landscape with towns inside it, not a city with a wall around it.

The part visitors mean by "Cappadocia" is compact: a triangle of volcanic valleys perhaps thirty kilometres across, with the village of Göreme at its centre and the towns of Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Ortahisar and Avanos ringed around it. Everything famous — the fairy chimneys, the painted cave churches, the balloon launch fields — lies within a twenty-minute drive of Göreme. The underground cities and the Ihlara Valley sit further south, an easy day-trip within the region.

The name, and how to say it

English speakers manage best with kah-pah-DOH-kyah; Turks say Kapadokya, which is also how it is written on every road sign, so do not panic when "Cappadocia" vanishes from the signage at the airport. The name is ancient — the Persians called the land Katpatuka, often glossed as "land of beautiful horses", and horses still graze the valley floors as if contractually obliged to keep the etymology alive.

Distances that actually matter
