Cappadocia Weather in May: The Green Month

The Cappadocia weather in May is warm by day and cool at night: long-period records put the average daytime high at 21.2°C (70°F) and the average overnight low at 9.3°C (49°F), for a monthly mean of 15.0°C (59°F). May is the last month before the plateau’s real heat arrives, and with the valleys still green it is the month our licensed guides would pick if they were choosing for themselves.

Everything that makes Cappadocia difficult in other months eases in May. It is not cold enough to need a serious coat, not hot enough to need a siesta, and the daylight is long enough that a full day of walking still ends before dinner. The only thing May asks of you is that you book early, because a great many people have worked this out.

What is the weather in Cappadocia in May like?

Warm, bright afternoons and cool, comfortable nights. The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes long-period averages for Nevşehir — the province covering Göreme, Ürgüp and the whole visitor heartland — and for May they give an average high of 21.2°C, an average low of 9.3°C and a mean of 15.0°C. That is the last month of the year whose average high stays in the low twenties: June steps up to 25.6°C and July to 29.3°C.

The months either side place it. April averages a 16.3°C high and a 5.2°C low; June reaches 25.6°C and 12.3°C. In practice that means the mornings have stopped being cold without the afternoons having become hard work.

May is the last month whose average high sits in the low twenties. After it, Cappadocia becomes a summer destination and the day has to be shaped around the heat.

Temperature in Cappadocia in May: day and night

The daily swing is close to twelve degrees, which is normal for this plateau: Cappadocia sits at roughly 1,000 meters and altitude does most of the cooling work after sunset, so heat never lingers into the night the way it does on the Turkish coast. A 21°C afternoon really can become a 9°C dawn. These are long-period averages from 1981–2010; individual weeks in May run both warmer and cooler.

Does it rain in Cappadocia in May?

Sometimes, and more often as short spring systems than as settled wet days. The dry inland air clears quickly and the ground follows, but the soft volcanic soil of the lower valleys can stay heavy for a day after a good shower, which is what shapes which walks we choose rather than the thermometer.

We will not publish a rainfall figure, because the source we trust does not give one. Do the hot air balloons fly in Cappadocia in May?

Yes, on most mornings — late spring gives the fleet some of its better conditions of the year. Türkiye’s civil aviation authority, not the pilots and not any tour operator, reads the wind at several altitudes before each sunrise and grounds everyone on mornings it does not clear, so no month is guaranteed. Even in May, dress for the launch field rather than the afternoon. A 9°C pre-dawn pickup after a 21°C afternoon surprises people every single spring, and standing still in an open field is colder than walking in one.

Is May a good time to visit Cappadocia?

It is arguably the best month of the year, and it is priced and populated accordingly. The valleys are green, the walking is superb at any hour, the light is long, the balloon odds are good and every site is open with plenty of daylight to use. The honest trade-off is company: May is peak season, cave hotels fill months ahead, and the coach waves reach the Göreme Open Air Museum between mid-morning and early afternoon. What should you wear in Cappadocia in May?

Summer clothes for the day and one real layer for the dawn. A t-shirt and light trousers or a dress for the afternoon, a fleece or sweater for the early morning and the evening, a warm jacket if you are flying at sunrise, closed walking shoes with grip for the volcanic valley floors, plus sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat — the altitude sun at 1,000 meters is stronger than 21°C makes it sound. How to plan a May day here

• Fly at dawn on your first morning and keep the rest spare. A sunrise tour from a valley rim is the consolation prize on a grounded day, and a good one.
• Walk whenever you like. May is one of the two months when a valley hike works at any hour of the day rather than only at the ends of it.
• Take the Green Tour while the gorge is full. The Green Tour runs through the Ihlara Valley, which is at its greenest and its coolest under the poplars in late spring.
• Beat the coaches, do not queue behind them. Early or after 15:00 at the Göreme Open Air Museum; the light is better then anyway.
• Use the underground cities for the warm part of the afternoon. Derinkuyu holds a steady 14°C in every season, which is a pleasant drop on a bright May day.
• Book early. May and September are the two months that sell out first, for hotels and balloon seats alike.
