That gap — nearly twelve degrees inside a single day — is the whole story of an October visit here, and it is why the month rewards layers more than any other. Is Cappadocia busy in October?

Less than September, and it empties week by week. September is genuinely busy and deserves to be; October starts firm and thins steadily, so an early-October visit feels like a well-attended high season and a late-October one feels like the place has been handed back to the locals. Prices soften along the same curve. If crowds are what you are dodging, the last ten days of October are among the best-value dates in the calendar — the trade is shorter daylight and colder mornings, not worse weather.

How does October change from start to finish?

Considerably, and it is worth planning around. Early October still carries September’s warmth in its afternoons and its crowds at the viewpoints. By the end of the month the poplars in the Ihlara Valley have turned gold, the vineyards are bare after harvest, and the mornings have real bite. The light improves the whole way through — low autumn sun is what photographers cross oceans for, and it is why a photography tour is at its best now rather than in June.

Daylight is the quiet constraint. The Göreme Open Air Museum publishes the same 08:00–18:45 opening hours all year, but by late October the useful light is gone well before the ticket office closes — so the last worthwhile hour inside is earlier than the gate suggests. Start earlier than you would in summer and you lose nothing.

What should you wear in Cappadocia in October?

Layers, and mean it — this is the month the advice actually earns its keep. A twelve-degree daily swing means the clothes that are right at 7am are wrong by 1pm. How to plan an October day here

• Fly at dawn, dressed for winter. October and September give the year’s calmest sunrises — but a sunrise start in October is a 7°C proposition.
• Walk in the middle of the day. October is the one month when midday is the pleasant part, which makes it the best valley hiking month of the year. Summer walkers can only manage dawn and dusk; you get the whole day.
• Go south for the colour. The Green Tour takes in the Ihlara gorge, where the poplars turn through late October — the best autumn colour in the region by a distance.
• Use the underground cities as a warm room, not a cool one. Derinkuyu holds a steady 14°C in every season. In August that makes it the coolest place in Cappadocia; on a 7°C October morning it is warmer than the air outside, which surprises everyone.
